Management Accounts

Know exactly how your business is performing — every month, not once a year when it is too late to act.

Statutory accounts tell you what happened up to eighteen months ago. Management accounts tell you what is happening now: profitability by month, cash runway, margins by product or customer, and how actuals compare with budget. We produce monthly, quarterly or annual management accounts tailored to how you run your business, with commentary that explains the numbers rather than just presenting them — so you can spot problems early, back decisions with evidence and keep lenders and investors confident.

What You Get in a Management Accounts Pack

A typical Acumon management accounts pack includes: - Profit and loss account with month, year-to-date and prior-year comparisons - Balance sheet with working capital analysis - Cash flow reporting and a rolling cash forecast - KPI dashboard tailored to your business — gross margin, debtor days, pipeline, utilisation, whatever actually drives you - Budget vs actual variance analysis with explanations, not just differences - Plain-English commentary highlighting what needs attention

Every pack is built around your decisions, not a standard template.

Why Regular Management Accounts Pay for Themselves

- Catch margin erosion, cost creep and slow payers months before the year-end accounts would reveal them - Walk into bank and investor meetings with current, credible numbers — lenders routinely ask for management accounts before extending facilities - Make hiring, pricing and investment decisions on evidence rather than gut feel - Smooth the year-end: businesses with monthly management accounts get statutory accounts and tax returns done faster and cheaper - Support accurate quarterly reporting now that Making Tax Digital requires digital records and quarterly updates for many businesses

How We Deliver

We build the reporting on your cloud accounting platform — Xero (we are Gold Partners), Sage or QuickBooks — or from your existing records. Our UK-based team closes the period, posts the adjustments that bookkeeping alone misses (accruals, prepayments, depreciation, stock and work in progress), then prepares and reviews the pack. You get it on an agreed date each month or quarter, followed by a call to walk through the highlights if you want one. On-demand delivery means you can scale the service up or down as your needs change.

From Management Accounts to Management Insight

As your business grows, we can layer on budgeting and reforecasting, three-way cash flow modelling, board pack preparation and KPI design. If your needs become more complex, we can provide fully qualified accountants and CFO / Finance Director support — the natural next step once the monthly numbers start driving strategy.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What are management accounts?
Management accounts are internal financial reports — typically a profit and loss account, balance sheet, cash flow and KPIs — produced monthly or quarterly for the people running the business. Unlike statutory accounts, there is no prescribed format: they are designed purely to help you monitor performance, control cash and make better decisions, while the information is still fresh enough to act on.
Are management accounts a legal requirement?
No — no law requires them. But lenders usually ask for recent management accounts before granting or renewing facilities, investors expect them, and directors are far better placed to meet their duties with current numbers. They also make statutory year-end work quicker and cheaper because the records are kept decision-ready all year.
How often should I get management accounts?
Monthly is the norm for businesses that are growing, carrying debt, managing tight cash flow or answering to investors. Quarterly suits stable businesses that mainly want early warning and cleaner year-ends. We recommend a frequency based on how quickly things change in your business — and you can move between them as needs shift.
What is the difference between management accounts and statutory accounts?
Statutory accounts are the annual, legally required accounts filed at Companies House in a prescribed format, largely for external users, and arrive up to nine months after year end. Management accounts are internal, flexible in format, produced frequently and focused on the detail you manage by — margins, cash, KPIs and variances. Well-run businesses need both; management accounts are the ones you actually use week to week.
How much do management accounts cost?
It depends on the frequency, the state of your bookkeeping and the depth of analysis you want. Because our service is on-demand, you pay for the level you need rather than a fixed package, and we quote before we start. If we also handle your bookkeeping, the marginal cost of adding monthly management accounts is usually modest.
